When you see the words “Wonder Twin Powers” what do you think of? A cartoon? Pfft, let me tell you what comes to my mind………….
Iʼm walking down High Street with an iced coffee dripping down my hands. Itʼs yet another hot summer gallery hop night. My ears perk up as I hear the crack of a snare drum coming from a block away. As if my musical, spidy senses are driving me, I make my way to the sound; I ignore all else, like some bat in a cave. Then weaving my way through a crowd, I see and hear Joshua and Jenny, better known as Wonder Twin Powers.
Although I have worked with them on many occasions, I still reach for an appropriate string of adgectives to best describe Joshua and Jennyʼs sound. An acoustic power duo? Perhaps. To describe their music as sexy would be a vast understatement. They play with more chemistry than can be cooked up a mile north in the OSU labs. Between Joshuaʼs distinctly old school drumming styles and Jennyʼs sultry vocal stylings, they are impossible to overlook. As a pedestrian in the Short North, or the frequenter of a music club, Wonder Twin Powers can not be ignored.
To watch them perform is just as good as the music they create. Joshua, at one point is moving almost effortlessly behind his minimilist kit; itʼs as though he is relaxing on a recliner. The very next moment, he is hunching over his high hats, as a doctor to a patient. All the while, Jenny stands like a sandstone monolith, delivering vocal and guitar performances that will literally, smack you in the face. They seamlessly perform together. Wonder Twin Powers communicate in a way that will make you think twice about the existence of ESP; shooting each other a glancing smile, as if sharing an inside joke that you wish you were in on.
So get that silly cartoon idea out of your head. Go out and find them. Go out and dance, Unless you hate good music or something. Do you hate good music? I didnʼt think so.
