A NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD READ ON THIS POLL:

Cheating will not be tolerated. We keep logs of voters, and can tell when you’re trying to beat the system. If we find a band or their fans cheating on their behalf, we will go through the list and manually count the votes. This count will be lower than the number of people who actually voted for you, and it cheating will backfire on you. Period.

If you have a band you’d like added to the list, please leave it in a polite comment at the bottom.

For anyone that is concerned about the vote being a popularity contest; sorry, but it is one. We want to know who are the most popular and well loved artists in town. By its fundamental nature, this vote has to be a popularity contest. However, this vote is not the only thing we base our band choices on. It is simply one of many in a set of criteria that we take into account.

Comments

  1. Beatrice Harris says:

Sorry guys, but it’s Narrow and the Brights. Best Columbus band!

  2. ChrisShaw says:

I think G. Finesse and the NS Crew need a mention at LEAST.

  3. I’ve added Narrow and the Brights, as well as G Finesse and the NS Crew to the ballot. If anyone has other bands they want to see on here, just leave a comment and we’ll add it to the ballot!

  4. Alex Donaldson says:

The George Eliot Underground is my favorite band in Columbus and has been for years.

  5. Lee says:

Sadly, 2/3 of N&B have moved out of Ohio =(

  6. Rob Mottice says:

Bring on the Apple Bottom Gang!

  7. April says:

    twenty one pilots!

  8. Ty says:

    When does voting end?

  9. Jim says:

You want real musical talent? The Lost Revival is fantastic!

  10. Mike says:

  11. Chris says:

Really? No Karate Coyote, Floorwalkers, Deadwood Floats, Up All Nights, Andy Shaw Band, Town Monster, Phantods, Mike Wojniak, Way Yes, Theo’s Loose Hinges, Wonder Twin Powers or Andrew Varner???

    • Chris, Karate Coyote, , Town Monster, Phantods, and Way Yes have all been featured in our first two volumes. I can add the others you’ve mentioned to the ballot, though.

      • Chris says:

Sorry I just read “What is the best Columbus musical act this year?” and didn’t realize that it was something you can only be covered once ever for.

        • Chris, that’s a good point. Even though they wouldn’t be featured for in Volume 3, should our previous bands be listed so that people can still vote for them? I’m not sure, personally. Let’s both sleep on it and see what we think in the morning. :)

          • Chris says:

I haven’t had the chance to see one of your magazines but I’ll go with what I’m assuming. I think you should have all the bands. Take the top 5 as the best in cbus. Then take the next 17 that haven’t been in your magazines and do it with those. I would then have a section that tells the top 5 and maybe just a little something on them, or what they’ve been up to since you had them in your magazine.

          • Chris, where have you been hiding your genius? DONE.

      • Chris says:

Also it’s Wonder Twin POWERS (not partners) Thanks.

  12. Josh says:

^^ Many of those bands have already been picked for the two previous volumes. Also, is the voting working? I don’t seem to have any way to select a band?

  13. Jennifer says:

    Matter of Planets

  14. Jan says:

How can Lydia Brownfield NOT be on that list, as a band w/ Trouble With Brownfield or solo?

  15. Lily says:

I want to add a vote for Post Coma Network but I see no place above to cast my vote. Hope I am not too late. They are
    fab!!

  16. Tom says:

    Survivalist. Dey da best. survivalist.bandcamp.com

  17. where is BUM WEALTHY on this list?!?! Can I write in my vote?

  18. Leslie Wilson says:

I think we need to see Love Culture on this list!! Thank you so much…

  19. Cyle says:

    Alert New London baby!!!

  20. Seth says:

    Them Labs!!

  21. Paige says:

    One More Sun!

  22. Dudeguy says:

Obviously One More Sun is the best.

  23. All of the additional bands left in the comments to this point have been added to the ballot. Also, you are able to vote for up to 17 bands. If you’ve only cast a vote for one band so far, click “Vote” at the bottom of the results. That should let you vote for your other 16 choices.

Also, the vote has been extended to December 3rd at Midnight, so that you can come cast your vote in person at our next First Friday @ Kobo, December 2nd.

Thanks for all your votes! Keep them coming!

  24. Mike says:

Please add Old Worlds to the list of nominations.

  25. Bill Tippery says:

    Please add Old Worlds

  26. The Dr. says:

Fuck this scenester bullshit–Bridesmaid are the best tho.

    • Chris C says:

If I wasn’t already narcissistically floundering my vote to Indigo Wild I would totally be passing it on to my friends Alert New London, She Bears, and Deadwood Floats. Great list full of great talent!

  27. K.Moore says:

Love Culture is one of the only local bands that doesn’t bore me to death. I’ll take them and Narrow and the Brights over any band in this group.

  28. Andy Kramer says:

Sighless Sunday is my favorite band from Columbus!

  29. Derek says:

    Deadwood Floats!!!!

Dude you should put Southside Chiefs on the list. That would be rad.

  40. D. DePrater says:

    you should add Verner Caliper.

  41. Paul Painter says:

Raw Dough should be on the list. Matt Opachick is the best young guitar player in the USA and he lives in Columbus

  42. Wudi says:

After hearing Alert New London’s Youth album I have severe concerns about it becoming the best album of the year. If you worry like I do that ANL will get too big and lose all cred as a scenester band please help! Do not attend their CD release party at the Kobo tonight!!!!

That being said, Alert New London is amazing. Their new album is on repeat in my head, which is a truly glorious thing.

  43. Chuck says:

One More Sun’s newly released EP is free to download. Go to their Facebook or bandcamp.com… 5 songs absolutely FREE FREE FREE!!!!!!!

  44. Casey Ward says:

ElectroCult Circus is the best band in town …EVER!!!

  45. MONDO says:

ElectroCult Circus is making a pretty nice name for yourself! Vote for them and they’ll have sexual relations.

  46. Kristen says:

love culture. best band in the city and it’s not even close.

  47. Randy says:

It’s going down at the Dude Locker Warehouse (527 E. Hudson St. / Enter via Tompkins St. just East of Fourth St. Go to the tracks and take a left to the warehouse lot)

LO-PAN (Columbus, Heavy Desert Rock to listen to while riding your Hog into the sunset)
NEON WARSHIP (Dayton based Oceanic Blues Rock, members of Mouth of the Architect, Bringers of Disease, Auburndale)

  54. Wicky says:

I can’t believe the Spikedrivers or Groovestone Theory didn’t make the list!!!!!

  55. Curt says:

Pretty sure Bringers of Disease is a Dayton band.

  56. Yo-Yo says:

Looks like Cadaver Dogs are too cool and sweet to be on the list.
So it’s an easy choice, vote THE UP ALL NIGHTS.

This is the hot 17 so The Up All Nights deserve to win for always looking really good.

  57. Lebron Hubbard says:

Are the 17 bands in volume 3 determined solely upon this vote?

  58. Phillip J. Fry says:

Is this only for Columbus bands?

  59. Jerod says:

I think the Hot 17 should choose who they think is the best. The voting is corrupt, there’s no way some of the bands on top right now could be voted that high. They have more votes on this poll than facebook likes, blog follows, etc. etc. You would think they would have a broader internet following considering that’s the only way local/unknown bands get exposed these days….

    • Moby Dick says:

While any battle of the band/voting thing is inherently corrupt, or inaccurate, I’ve yet to talk to a booking agent/club/record label that opens the conversation with ‘How many Facebook Likes do you have?’ It’s a pretty piss poor indicator of a band’s following.

      • Lee says:

right, seeing that you can just clear your browsers cookies and vote again…whoops, did I just break the secret?

        • Moby Dick says:

I’d imagine any browser with an option to browse anonymously would do the same thing.

          • Nope says:

Sure bands can find dirty ways to reach the 17…but it really goes back to kind of a moral / ethical thing. Do you want to make it into the 17 by cheating and knowing that your band doesn’t really deserve it. Thus ruining it for everyone or would you rather have it that your band worked their ass off playing shows and campaigning endlessly to be in the 17 and deserve every damn bit of it. I would hope it would be the campaigning and playing method.

The big problem I see is that there are bands in the voting that aren’t even from Columbus. Isn’t this contest supposed to be the 17 hottest COLUMBUS bands? Please correct that.

        • Moby Dick says:

Also, even if most of the votes are cheats it is still driving traffic to the Hot 17′s website. So since this is more or less about promoting The Hot 17 they should just sit back and enjoy it while the haters hate.

      • We realize that the voting system isn’t perfect. That’s why votes are not the only thing we base artist selection on. We look at how many votes they got, the band’s online presence, the shows they play with other local and regional bands, their recent album releases, and other criteria that’s more thoroughly outlined in our Participate! section. We also have an invitation only listening party where some of the leading music professionals in Columbus put in their opinions. And of course, we go to live shows to see the band play in person. Ultimately, we do choose the 17. We like the online voting because it lets everyone participate in the process.

@Jared – We would love to have a larger internet following. We’re a young company, as this is only our third year in business. Suggest us to your friends, we’ll love you forever. :)

@Lee – Yes, you now know the secret. Try not to take advantage. :)

@Nope – I hope everyone else sees the ethics as you do. Also, what other bands on the list aren’t from Columbus? I will remove them immediately.

@Moby – Excellent point, I think we will sit back and enjoy.

      • Jerod says:

@Moby It’s a piss poor way to give an example as to how to judge a band’s following, yes, but I was giving it as an example of a general internet following. So I use an example that everyone knows…facebook…and I stress internet following because people are voting on a poll via the internet. And how have these bands communicated to their following that this vote even exists? — The band communicates to them through networking sites such as their blogs, twitter, facebook, etc, etc. Hope this clears up my statement Moby.

@Meghan I will certainly support your new magazine, although I still need to read it in order to have an opinion on it. But, it’s centered around the arts of Columbus, Ohio, therefore as an artist myself, I can’t help but be enthused by what you’re doing. Also if you guys need any video material as far as promoting goes, let me know. I hardly charge.

        • Thanks Jerod! We have a team of video people that produce online stuff, if you’d like to join up with them. They’ve got some exciting projects coming up.

Oh, and as for availability, you can buy our book from this year, Volume 2, and our first Volume (2009-2010) from the “buy now” link above, or from our merch booth at any of our First Friday Showcases each month at Kobo. You can also vote in person that way. Hope to see you there!

  60. Nick says:

No Curse Icon or Lovesick Radio?

  61. Katie says:

Since I had never heard of Bringers of Disease, I looked them up. They’re in Dayton. Way to be the hottest band in Columbus, Dayton.

  62. Adriana says:

    ALWOOD SISTERS, PLEASE!

  63. curious mind says:

I just tried to the clear cookies thing and while it brought the boxes back up to be checked it didnt accept my vote so cookies alone doesn’t do it, It has to be a different IP address.

  64. Riley says:

    Miller-Kelton?

  65. To all: We’ve been back and forth on Bringers of Disease. I have talked with the band myself, and they are currently living in Columbus. They relocated here about 6 months ago. Therefore, they have been re-added to the ballot with all of their previous votes. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

  66. Chip Burke says:

The Slang.. add em. This looks like a list of “who has played ComFest” otherwise.

  67. Sammy says:

we were nominated late so i just couldn’t let my band name sit around on some website with no votes. if nothing else we would like to prove that we have a Columbus fan base. not sure what the best way to choose 17 bands is, but the online vote does seem easy to cheat. thanks for including us though and thanks for caring about the Columbus music scene.

    • Hi Sammy!

No worries, the voting is not the only thing we base our band selection on. It’s just part of the equation. It’s also a great way for the community to tell us what bands *they* like most.

  68. Dustin says:

Add I Mustache You A Question. Newer to the scene. Check em out! Playing at Kobo Nov. 25 with Indigo Wild.
    http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Mustache-You-a-Question/125163714215914

  69. Tim Razler says:

Isn’t Bringers of Disease out of Dayton, not Columbus?

  70. Tim Razler says:

Nevermind my last post. I’m an idiot and didn’t bother reading the other comments.

  71. I Mustache You A Question says:

Our name is spelled incorrectly in the polls. Not a big deal unless we make it up higher. Thanks to all who voted for us!

  72. this voting is silly says:

    lol @ dirty girls

    • curious mind says:

hahah cheating has never been more obvious.

      • Phillip J Fry says:

Yeah, I thought Dirty Girls sucked before as a band, now I dislike them as people too.

      • Lindsay Lohan says:

Haha, at least someone got it. It was supposed to be obvious. If I was trying to be sneaky I would have given Dirty Girls a bunch of steady votes over a few weeks, ya big dummies. I intended to give Dirty Girls 10k+ votes, but the script I wrote ate up all my ram and crashed in the middle of the night lol. I just saw that people were clearly taking advantage of the system and didn’t want to see too much weight given to this vote.

  73. Dave Butler says:

What the hell do you guys win?

  74. Alex Donaldson says:

    DIRTY GIRLS BLOWIN UP

    • Alex Donaldson says:

out of all seriousness, how have the new bomb turks NEVER been in an issue?? they are the most influential band in columbus. i don’t care how many votes they have.

      • Ducky Tapes says:

Alex – the New Bomb Turks are awesome, but I believe the question is What is the best Columbus musical act THIS year? New Bomb Turks have no shows and havent signed into their myspace account in over a year! I truly believe they would be up top if the hot 17 was created 2002.

    • Ducky Tapes says:

who the heck are the dirty girls? do they have a website? I keep getting blocked when I google their name at work.

  75. Chris says:

I believe Andrew Varner is now in Nashville.

  76. John Dingelfish says:

I call bullshit on Dirty Girls. Over 3000 votes in a day… I don’t think so.

  77. paul says:

WOW! Dirty Girls, a band i have never heard of with 4000 votes? hmmmmmmm………….nothing fishy there.

  78. Zachary Allen Starkey says:

You should add Zachary Allen Starkey.

    • turd ferguson says:

This isn’t a hair-style contest. Plus, you’re not in Columbus.

      • Zachery Allan Starkey says:

My name is actually ZachEry AllAn and I don’t nominate myself to be put on best of lists, or whatever this is, because that’s in poor taste.

Plus, I live in NYC, haven’t been in Columbus for a very long time, and I don’t even know what the Hot 17 is. A friend sent me a link to this page.

        Have fun guys.

  79. The Dirty Girls worked so hard to get those votes. I’m like, best friends with all of them and I have their posters on my wall. I’m the president of their fan club and the head of their street team and let me tell you guyz We HIT THE STREETZ to get those votes. I can 100% confirm that they are legit and you guys are just super jealous of how many friends and fans they have. So go ahead and keep hating but the fact of the matter is JERRY SANDUSKY IS GUILTY.

  81. DONALD TRUMP says:

This whole voting system is a popularity contest where everyone votes for themselves. Anyone with more than 7 votes is a cheater, and I think it’s hilarious.

    • Turd Ferguson says:

Really? I can say we’ve honestly gotten way more than that the good ol’ fashioned way. But that may be because we’re actually trying. Going to computer labs @ OSU w/ cheap fliers (the poll box pic with three easy steps on how to vote), libraries, asking people to take a few seconds to vote. Any time I’ve seen someone hanging out on campus with a smart phone/laptop I’ve asked them to help. They almost never say no. Also, between me and my band mates we’ve probably sent 1000+ texts. This voting thing doesn’t necessarily determine a winner, but we take this approach with everything we do. Don’t you?

      • Cooter Houston says:

If the “good ol’ fasioned way” is getting every stranger with an IP address who has never heard of your band to vote for you, then my name is Col. Sanders. I could stand on a campus street corner and ask every passer-by with an iPhone to vote for a band they probably have never even heard of, but I have more meaningful things to do with my life – like frying chicken and making music. The list of amazingly talented, active, long-time Columbus bands at the bottom of the list with hardly any votes is staggering. Being at the top of the list only means that you are desparately pandering for votes from people who have no idea what they are voting for. What political office are you running for? Did someone say chicken? I’m hungry.

        • turd ferguson says:

How many of these bands have you even seen? Camping outside the Off Ramp waiting for someone to notice you doesn’t count.

          • Cooter Houston says:

What does that have to do with anything? But since you asked, at least 34 of them. And only 1 or 2 were at the off-ramp stage. I could contact my whole network (friends/co-workers/family/complete strangers) and get 1,000 votes, but that doesn’t make my band any better or worse. I use those methods to get them to shows. The method described above is better suited for getting your petition signed to make fat laces legal again. I could nominate a fictional band and get them hundreds of votes, but I am not sure what that would mean.
This is precisely why the Hot 17 takes other methods into consideration, because this system is inherently flawed and is not single gauge of who the best bands in town are. One of the ways, but not the only way.
Thankfully, they know this. Their goal is to find the best talent in musical talent in Columbus. The people who are just trying to get votes for the sake of getting votes are called “politicians”.

  82. I MEAN CLEARLY IT’S RIGGED BECAUSE HONEY GUN ISN’T ON THE LIST

  87. Sammy says:

whoever hasn’t heard of dirty girls needs to change that and check out a show. they are sweet. also i did vote for my band…once! i made a facebook group and invited people to vote. i bet a few other bands did similar things. also it doesn’t need changed but my band has a “the” in front of “up all nights.” best of luck to all.

  89. Kate Shannon says:

    I’d like to add sovroncourt

  90. Diego V. says:

Guys check out Antaean…I believe they at least deserve to be on this list with all this awesome talent!

  91. Randys Fan says:

The poll listed “The Randys” name incorrectly. Bummer.

  92. T.J. Brown says:

I have to mention BEYOND PLUTO. Columbus/Earth needs more alternatives for hip hop that speak volumes, and this is a great place to start.
